"You can't fix stupid!"

« on: March 26, 2010, 11:12:57 AM »

I found this article on MSNBC just a short while ago.  It came to them compliments of WPBF Channel 25 in West Palm Beach.

If Lance Corporal Justin Wilson wanted "flags" upon his return, that should be honored, not only within his neighborhood, but throughout STUART.   As soon as I find out what time his remains are being returned to Stuart, I'll post it here.  If you have a flag, no matter what size it is, I'd like for you to attend.

Palm City Marine Killed In Afghanistan 'Wanted Flags'

PALM CITY, Fla. - WPBF.com

Friends and family of a 24-year-old Palm City Marine killed in Afghanistan have honored his wish for a hero's return.

Lance Cpl. Justin J. Wilson died in the line of duty on Monday.

"He said if he ever came home in a box that he would want thousands of people to know that he had died for his country," friend Cindy Capwell said on Thursday.

So, Capwell and Wilson's family members gave him just that, lining the street where he once lived with American flags.

"He wanted flags and flags," Capwell said. "He just always said, 'If I come home dead, I want flags.'"

Wilson's father said his son was killed on one of his last patrols and had just 57 days left in his tour of duty. He was deployed in November and had married his wife, Hannah McVeigh, one month earlier.

Annette McVeigh, Wilson's mother-in-law, said the couple was "so happy."

"I look at them and I think how happy, how happy they were together and how happy they made each other, and it's so sad, heart-wrenching to think of the short time they had together," McVeigh said.

In lieu of flowers, Wilson's family has asked that donations be made to the Wounded Warrior Program.

Services Planned for Fallen Palm City Marine

By Will Greenlee
March 26, 2010

PALM CITY — The body of Marine Lance Cpl. Justin Wilson, who was killed by a roadside bomb in Afghanistan, is expected to be flown into Witham Field on Sunday before services next week, a family member said Friday.

Wilson, 24, joined the Marine Corps in January 2009 and deployed to Afghanistan 10 months later. He died Monday, killed by an IED or improvised explosive device, his father has said.

Wilson’s body is expected to be flown into Witham Field in Stuart about 2 p.m. or 3 p.m. Sunday, Ed Forte, Wilson’s uncle, said Friday. Wilson’s cousin, Marine Lance Cpl. Carl Ruggiero, 19, and Wilson’s 20-year-old brother also will be on the plane, Forte said.

Several motorcycle groups are expected to escort Wilson’s body to Forest Hills funeral home in Palm City where viewings are scheduled for Monday 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.; Tuesday 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., Forte said.

A mass at Holy Redeemer Catholic Church will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, and a service with military honors will follow at the cemetery off Southwest Murphy Road.

Wilson, a native of Huntington, NY, was a five year Palm City resident who was married to Hannah McVeigh in October in North Carolina.

The last time Lance Wilson spoke to his son was March 17 — Justin’s 24th birthday. The phone connection was crackling as Justin spoke from somewhere in the Helmand province, Lance Wilson has said.

“He was a little afraid. I could hear it in his voice,” Lance Wilson said. “He didn’t want to talk about what was going on there. He wanted to talk about his wife, the family. He wanted to know what was going on at home.”

Marine Cpl. Ian T. Zook , an 18-year Port St. Lucie resident, is buried at Forest Hills Memorial Park. Zook died in Oct. 2004 in Iraq’s Al Anbar province.

My comment over at the TCPalm site:

We should be lining the streets for this man on Sunday from the airport to the funeral home.

It was reported on MSNBC that "if I die, promise you will line the streets with flags."

I didn't promise him as his family did, but I will promise that I will be there on Sunday and Wednesday.

Lance Corporal Wilson deserves a heroes welcome and a heroes farewell.

The route should be firmed up tomorrow by the Leathernecks.

I know that I will be standing at the Witham Airfield on Sunday, beginning at 12:45pm.

Rick and I went to the CG Exchange today and purchased hand flags.  I have a limited supply.  Anyone needing one that will be in attendance, let me know.
